Best Shortest Songs

What are some of the best shortest songs out there?

There are short songs that serve as intros, outros, or ones that have a purely atmospheric value. There are hidden tracks. Joke songs. Maybe all of the above.

Here are some short songs (all under 2 minutes) that I love. And if you can think of other ones, tell me!

1. Her Majesty - The Beatles

This is a good starting point. “Her Majesty” was famously left off Side Two of Abbey Road and later put back in at the very end. Good decision after all! This is the shortest song on my list, and one of the more popular ones.

2. Crackity Jones - Pixies

Straight up rocker from the Pixies. Standout quote: “I’m moving out of this hospedaje/I’m afraid you’ll cut me, boy!”.

3. Bookends Theme - Simon & Garfunkel

Simon & Garfunkel seem to the masters of short songs. Check out Parsley Sage, Rosemary and Thyme for more songs that clock in right around 2 minutes. One of my other favorites is “A Poem On The Underground Wall”. (Unfortunately, none of the S & G videos are allowed to be embedded on Tumblr, so you have to watch it on YouTube).

4. Illustrated Bible Stories for Children - The Weakerthans

The Weakerthans aren’t the most well-known band, and even if you’re familiar with their music, you might not know that aside from power-pop they are also a really good folk band. In my opinion, a much better folk band.

5. Utilitarian - Spoon

One of Spoon’s earliest efforts. One of their best. Standout quote: “I’ve got meat in my arms/I’ve got steel in my teeth, so come on”.

6. I Will - Radiohead

This one of a bit of a stretch because it comes in right at the 2:00 minute mark, but I couldn’t not put this song in. One of the most beautiful Radiohead songs. (EMI also won’t let me embed this song. Watch on YouTube!)

7. Raining In Darling - Bonnie “Prince” Billy.

I saved the best for last. This song is probably the saddest in the list, even though we have Radiohead on here. Standout quote: “And I know you love me/I know you do”.

Local Radar

Great news!
Jon Schober of the Current blog wrote a really great review of “Aliens” right here:

“The great thing about Oleh Zaychenko’s project is its startling frankness — his words are exposed and honest. So when I hear the first line of "Aliens” — “I got abducted by aliens” — I’m poised to give him props for having the courage to say such a recycled phrase with 100 percent confidence. And during the next three minutes, we’re treated to the addition of several more instruments that eliminate any feeling of sparseness. Zaychenko seems to know that he has to pull something interesting out of his hat to keep the engagement level in check. From that point forward, the lyrics continue to grow more interesting as each new beat gets added to the mix. This is again the music of a Macalester College student and a Twin Cities transplant via Chicago and Ukraine. He graduates in May — let’s keep him around"

Thanks, Jon!
